Very nervous per-sons, and those subject to a determination to the brain, must resort toit with extreme caution. Generally the stream should be directed tothe hack of the neck, along the spine, hips, and shoulders; in chronic?waitings of the joints the stream ma\ be directed to the affectedII—3. No strong douche should ever betaken on the head, nor should it be long continued on any one spotabout the spine or back bone. Douches may be so constructed as to produce any degree of impression, from that which is scarcely appreciable, to one a9 powerful as themuscular system can endure, according to the size of the stream, itsfall, pressure, etc. They may be vertical, oblique, horizontal, ox as-cending. Those most generally in use are perpendicular streams fromone to two inches in diameter Smaller streams, as inch and halfinch are better in some cases The oblique and horizontal streamscan be more conveniently applied locally when indicated, and in manycases, a9 in difficult respiration, it is advantageous to have the bodilyposition erect during its application.
