Of birds there are domesticated races of doves, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, swans, pea-fowls, pheasants, canarybirds, ostriches, cormorants and others. Of these the dovesand chickens are represented by the most varieties. Brown,an English authority on domesticated birds, lists more than 270 THE ANIMALS AND MAN seventy races of chickens now living, thirteen races of ducks, ten of geese and eight of turkeys. Of pigeons there mustbe nearly as many domestic races as there are of yet all of them, with all their extraordinary variety ofcrests, and ruffs, and tails and plumage pattern, and alltheir various special manners such as tumbling, dancing,. FIG. 144. Typical American Merino ewe, a highly specialized breed ofsheep, with fine, close-set wool. (After Shaw.) and the like, are descended from a single wild species, thecommon rock dove, Columba lima, of Europe, Asia andNorth Africa (fig. 136). The domestic races of chickens are by some naturalistsalso held to be descended from a single wild species, thejungle fowl, Callus bankivus, which ranges from Hindukooshto the Chinese island of Hainau and through most of theIndonesian islands. But other naturalists believe that oneor two other wild species of fowl are concerned in the an-cestry of our barnyard hen. DOMESTICATED ANIMALS 271 The domestic ducks are derived from the wild duck Anasboschas, and have evidently originated from this ancestorindependently both in China and in Europe. The domesticgeese seem to have an older origin than the ducks; in factgeese are probably the oldest of domesticated birds.
