Horned Grebe Podiceps auritus (Linnaeus) Status: The Horned Grebe is an uncommon transient and rare winter resident throughout the state. It has been recorded from 44 counties. Since the building of major reservoirs in Kansas, this species has been recorded on several Christmas bird counts. Habits and Habitat: The Horned Grebe occurs principally on lakes and reservoirs, but look for it also around marshes where there is enough water for it to take flight. Grebes must "run" along the surface for a considerable distance before attaining sufficient forward momentum to become airborne. They usually dive instead of taking flight when disturbed. Food: Small fishes, aquatic insects, and crayfishes make up the main portion of their diet. They also eat some vegetable matter.
