A treatise on the science and practice of midwifery . ones eventuallyyielded sufficiently to render this unnecessary. Mode of Production in Osteo-malacia.—The weight of the body de-presses the sacrum in a vertical direction, and at the same timecompresses its component parts together, so as to approximate thebase and apex of the bone, and narrow the conjugate diameter ofthe brim, by causing the promontory to encroach upon it. The mostcharacteristic changes are produced by the pushing inwards of thewalls of the pelvis at the cotyloid cavities, in consequence of pressureexerted at these points through the femurs. The effect of this is todiminish both oblique diameters, giving the brim somewhat theshape of a trefoil, or an ace of clubs. The sides of the pubis are atthe same time approximated, and may become almost parallel, and 1 Obst. Trans., vol. vi. p. 97.
