On the outbreakof the Spanish War he organized the first regiment of UnitedStates volunteer engineers and commanded this organization inthe Porto Rico campaign. At the close of the war he was giventhe title of brigadier-general. He was a member of many clubsand engineering organizations, and was a director in most ofthe foreign Thomson-Houston companies.
