It is with satisfaction that we read that Cortesdied in solitude and neglect, though, as he said proudly, he had givenCharles V. more provinces than his ancestors had left him cities. Mexico was a Spanish possession for three hundred years, and Spainworked it specially as a source of wealth to the crown. The nativeswere compelled to work in strict subjection on plantations andin mines; and in the process a very considerable intermix-ture of the Spaniards and their subjects took place. Early in the present century the Creoleswere discontented with the governors sent out from Spain; and in 1810they revolted. After partial failures, Mexican independence was pro-claimed in 1821, under Iturbide, who was proclaimed emperor, and atonce had to face a republican revolt under Santa Anna. After thisperiod it is almost an endless task to trace the three hundred revolutionsand disturbances of Mexican peace, from which a large Indian populationhold aloof, preying on both contending parties alike. For various periods,shorter and longer, Santa Anna was dictator or president; but during hissway, New Mexico, California, and Texas were ceded to the United
