The Honleyroute track is mostly single line with loops, whereas thecars with the ordinary gears were run on a double-track line with newer rails in first-class condition. He states further that the differential gears were in-troduced to eliminate rail corrugation trouble. Priorto the introduction of the new type gears on the Honleysection the corrugations were ground out as far as pos-sible by means of emery blocks attached to a car DIFFERENTIAL GEAR USED ONT HUDDERSFIEEDTRAMWAYS CARS This work was done at night and it is possible that ina few places where the track was loose and uneven thegrinding was not so effectively done as where the trackwas in good condition. Since October, 1914, this sectionhas been worked entirely with the differentially-gearedcars, and with a few slight exceptions corrugations havenot reappeared. The exceptions are in places where thetrack is very loose on its foundation. Mr. Wilkinson isin doubt as to whether the corrugation is in consequenceof the looseness of the track or vice versa. The experience on the Honley section is significant inthat one of the theories of corrugation is that it is dueto the slipping and skidding of the wheels. These are,of course, absent with the differentially-geared is no difference in energy consumption betweenthe cars equipped with the two types of drive.
