I/^^zCot-^^^JT ^^^??^^2^-^-7-) IRVIHG, Washington, author, called TheFather of American Literature, was born in NewYork city Apr. 3, 1783, the son of William Irving,a native of the Orkney Islands, and of Sarah Sanders,his wife. William Irving was a seafaring man, whofor a time had employment upon a British vesselrunning between Falmouth and New York, andmarried his wife at the former port in 1761. Two_ years later he settled in New York, with which city he hadbecome acquainted during hisseveral voyages thereto, andstarted in business for him-self, as is stated, in Williamstreet, near Fulton. Herewere born to these two, elevenchildren, of whom Washing-ton Irving was the the revolution, thefamily suffered from the trou-bles consequent to such acondition, and at one timewere obliged to flee to NewJersey, where they lived for awhile, returning to New Yorkafterward, and residing in acomfortable old house witlamany gables, not far fromJohn street.
