Brazil, Aleijadinho work of Aleijadinho at the church of Bom Jesus de is the greatest artist of his time

Brazil. The work of Aleijadinho, Antonio Francisco Lisboa 1730? -Nov 18th 1814, the greatest artist Brazil has known. Born in Vila Rica (rich town) whose name was changed to Ouro Preto (black gold). His father was a carpenter and later became an architect. He learned the basics of sculpture & architecture and first became a carpenter at the church of Our Lady of Carmel, on which his father was the architect. He soon became an architect himself. Shortly after this he got a crippling disease, probably leprosy and got the name we know him by O Aleijadinho (little Cripple). After that he did most of his work by night or carried by his assistants on a palanquin. His great achievement was the twelve prophets which were carved in the church of Bom Jesus de Matsinhos at Congonhas. Since he had no hands, he would have the hammers and chisels strapped to what remained of his hands. Since he had no legs, he would be strapped to ladders which enabled him to work off the ground. Sculptor, Carpenter, Artist, Carver,
