Commercial Union Assurance Group building, 200 Saint Vincent street

Commercial Union Assurance Group (you can pick out the "shadow" of the lettering in the photograph) building, 200 Saint Vincent Street, Glasgow. Before that it was the North British and Mercantile Insurance Building. The Architect was John James Burnet (1857-1938). This building was designed 1925. John James Burnet designed loads of buildings, some of the more famous ones were: Barony Church, High Street, Glasgow in 1886, now belongs to Strathclyde University, Charing Cross Mansions, Charing Cross, Glasgow in 1891, RW Forsyth's Department Store, Gordon Street, Glasgow in 1896, Restoration of Duart Castle, Isle of Mull in 1911 (if nothing else he was flexible), Balliol College Chapel, Oxford in 1916, Selfridges Department Store, London in 1919, Cenotaph in George Square, Glasgow in 1924, the Daily Telegraph Building, Fleet Street, London in 1925 and maybe his most famous design - Sydney Harbour Bridge, in 1929. The initial sculptures were by Archibald C Dawson (1892-1938). He worked with a sculptor called Jack Mortimer. The lower 2 sculptures were added in 1953 by Jack Mortimer. They represent the Seafarer & his wife - but are in fact the likenesses of Archibald C Dawson and his wife. I love the fact that the original sculptor ended up with his face on the building, he is buried in an unmarked grave, but he deserved some recognition! 200SVS as it's now known is a Wedding & Business venue, with serviced offices, etc.
