Ilelenium autumnalo sin)tn- bum, while common, is a fine border plant and excellent for cutting. Fine also are the Drecr introductions, River- ton Beauty and Riverton Gem. Others Now Blooming. The jyitmt white plantain, F'unkin subcordata grandiflora, is a striking object now. The large, handsome loaves are in themselves effective. This will do well in the sun, but succeeds even better in jiartial shade. Plumbago T>ar pcnta> is one of the most charming of dwarf, spreading plants at this season, smothered as it is with deep blue flowers. Some of the goldenrods are fine now and nothing could be more striking than some bold masses of Solidago altissima and Golden Wings now in flower; both of these are talJ growers and carry im- mense heads of golden yellow flowers. Of tlie veronicas or speedwells, V. longifolia subsessilis, the Japanese va- riety, with its dense spikes of dark blue flowers, now appearing, is the queen of the entire family. Viola cornuta atro- purpurea blooms still, as it has done since late May. Dicentra eximia formosa has not been out of bloom for over four months, and the cardinal flowers both along the ])ond-sides and in dry borders make a brilliant showing. The more subdued Lobelia syphilitica, with blue flowers, still remains with us. A plant not much grown, but now in flower, is <)])hio])ogan; the foliage is bright and handsome, even without the bluish spikes of flowers. Useful for cutting are the lUpatori inns. Fraseri is just opening its Ijirgc I'orynibs of jnire wliite flowers, wliile (•(plestinnm, jiale blue in color, has been flowering for a few weeks. The t'lil Japanese anemones liave stalks well advanced and flowers will soon be open, to be followed by the iPonii)on i-Firysanthe
