Postgraduate Statistics Centre And Learning Zone Building Lancaster University, Lancaster, United Kingdom. Architect: John McAsl

The building is connected to the existing accommodation by an atrium, creating a visible front door to the department, and improving accessibility. The high quality teaching and research spaces are tailored to an expanded academic need. The north-facing elevation is fully glazed, giving views out onto the landscaped space, and also reveals the activity of the hub spine. The south elevation is louvred to mitigate summertime solar gain and incorporates solar chimneys to promote passive ventilation of teaching spaces. The ground floor is given over to teaching space. Accessibility is a key driver for all the University’s new teaching accommodation. The spaces used by the majority of students, visitors and staff are immediately visible and accessible on entering the building. In addition, the ground floor provides a dedicated entrance for the Mathematics and Statistics Department and a flexible foyer space overlooking the landscaped area to the north of the building.
