But, in recompense, there was a considerableamount of staring on private account, especially among the color-ed population. And they flattered themselves, as they descendedfrom their carriage at the door of the principal hotel—Crayon inhis hunting costume, and each of the girls with a book in her hand—that there was an unusual commotion among the loungers. Theidea of making an impression was not altogether ungrateful to ourfriends, as they well knew that Staunton Avas renowned all overthe State for its cultivated society.
