Rear foot and ankle bones. Artwork of a rear (posterior) view of some of the bones and cartilage of the human foot and ankle. At top, the lower leg bones are the tibia (thicker bone) and the fibula. They articulate at the ankle with a group of bones called the tarsus. The two foot bones seen most clearly in this view are the calcaneus (heel bone) and the talus bone (astragalus, between calcaneus and tibia). The other bones (not clearly seen) are the metatarsals and phalanges (toe bones). The foot has 26 bones in total. The surfaces of the joints are covered in a form of hyaline cartilage called articular cartilage (white) that protects the bone surface from wear and tear.
