London. circa. 1910. A class of young schoolboys and their teacher pose for a group photograph in front of their school building. The boys attend Gopsall Street School, Hackney. One boy is holding a board displaying the name of the class, “Standard IV”. Following the 1876 Education Act, pupils who had passed the Standard IV examination at 10 years of age and held a certificate of regular attendance for five years were entitled to free education for three years. Some of the boys are wearing stiff starched linen collars.
