Solar Coronameter controls. Astro- nomer Darryl Koon at the controls of the solar Coronameter telescope at Mauna Loa, Hawaii. The Coronameter's images are displayed on computer screens. The instrument observes the white-light component of the Sun's outer atmosphere (corona). It uses a disk (shown as a brown central circle on the screens) to block out the brightness of the Sun's surface which normally drowns out the corona around it. This coronagraph is part of the High Altitude Solar Observatory facility; instruments like this are placed at high altitude sites to re- duce atmospheric scattering of the incoming light.
