Canadair Argus Four Engined Maritime Patrol

The Canadian-built, Canadair Argus was a unique hybrid that employed the wings, tail surfaces and undercarriage of the British designed Britannia transport, married to a completely new unpressurized fuselage of Canadian design and equipped with different American-designed engines. One of the most effective anit-submarine warfare aircraft of it's day, the Argus was a mainstay for the RCAF in the maritime role. The Argus replaced the Lancaster and Neptune aircraft types previously flown in the maritime roles and eventually, the Argus was itself to be replaced by the current CP-140 Aurora aircraft. The first Argus was delivered in Sep 1957 and last flew in 1981. The Greenwood Squadrons included 404, 405 415 & 449 Sqns. The Argus had a reputation as a workhorse and had tremendous endurance. With a flight crew of five, and an additional six sensor operators, the Aircraft flew missions in excess of twenty hours frequently. An Argus flown by 407 Maritime Patrol Squadron held the record for the longest flight by an unrefuelled Aircraft, slightly over 31 hours. This record stood for almost twenty years until broken by a Rutan experimental Aircraft which circled the globe unrefuelled. The Aircraft served from the 50's to the 80's until it was replaced by the current CP-140 Aurora Aircraft. When the Argus entered service in 1957, it gave the RCAF the most advanced anti-submarine Aircraft in the world. Although only 33 were built, there were still 31 in the Air Force inventory when it was retired in 1982 and replaced by the CP-140 Aurora. A few examples still exist in Canada, awaiting homes at museums.
