Ruth Beitia from Spain, starting her run-up, during the high jump competition, at the Sainsbury's Anniversary Games, Horse Guards Parade Siunday 20th June went on to finish second with a jump of meters.
In 1998 Ruth broke her first Spanish record, jumping m. In the years following, she improved her cleared jump heights several times. Finally, on 4 August 2007, she achieved m, which is the current record in Spain. She is the first, and thus far, only Spanish woman who has broken through the barrier of two meters, and was the 9th best global mark in 2003. Her major international results achieved under the roof. In 2005, she won the silver medal in the European Championships, held in Madrid indoors, where her only jump of m, was beaten by Russian Anna Chicherova. In 2006 she won the bronze medal at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Moscow, where she jumped m, and was only beaten by the Russian Olympic champion Yelena Slesarenko and Croatian Blanka Vlasic. She was a finalist at the World Championships outdoors Paris 2003, where she held the 11th position. In the world championships Helsinki 2005 she failed to reach the finals. She was a finalist in the European Athletics Championships in Munich in 2002, where she held the 11th position. She participated in the 2004 Athens Olympics, but failed to reach the finals. She has been champion of Spain once outdoors (in 2003), and indoor champion four times (in 2002-03-04-05). She belongs to the Club Valencia Terra i Mar and her coach is Ramon Torralbo. She is m tall, and weighs 71 kg. In 2004, she managed to jump the indoor m, equaling her best outdoor jump. On 8 March 2009, she won the silver medal in the high jump, her third medal at the 2009 European Athletics Indoor Championships held in Turin, with a mark of m. She was bested by German Ariane Friedrich with a mark of m. In the Berlin World Championships 2009, she took 5th place, with a mark of m. In 2009, she signed for Atletismo Pielagos Ruth Beitia gets the gold medal at the European Championships in Athletics held in Helsinki in 2012 with a mark of m. In the 2012 London Olympics, with a fourth place.
