Memorial temples, Deir el-Bahri, Egypt. Aerial view of the memorial temples of the ancient Egyptian rulers Hatshepsut, Thutmos III and Mentuhotep II. These temples were built into the cliff face of the Theban Hills. The largest structure is the memorial to Hatshepsut (centre), the female pharaoh who ruled Egypt between 1479-1458 BC. This temple, known as Djeser- Djeseru, was designed by the royal architect Senemut. The colonnaded terraces were originally decorated with ornate gardens. Thutmose III was the successor to Hatshepsut. The ruins of his memorial temple lie between Djesser-Djeseru and the larger temple of Mentuhotep II, who was ruler of Egypt from 2061-2010 BC.
