This image may not be used to state or imply endorsement by CERN of any product, activity or service ISOLDE facility at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, in July 2017. ISOLDE produces beams of unstable isotopes of atomic nuclei, which emit gamma rays as they decay. It uses protons from the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB). ISOLDE began operating in 1967 and has been rebuilt twice with major upgrades in 1974 and 1992. Detectors include the REX-ISOLDE miniball, which uses germanium (Ge) detectors to measure the gamma ray spectra of the nuclei, providing information on their structure and lifetime.
