If we accept the statement that24,000 catties of tea are carried up this road by yak and mulesfor consumption in Tibet, for 300 days in the year, we findthat 7,200,000 catties of tea are carried over this great northroad. If we look at Sir Alexander Hosies carefully worked-outreport, founded on the statistics he was able to obtain atTachienlu, we find that he estimated the tea passing throughTachienlu every year at 8,533,000 catties, and the value toamount to 948,591 taels. My rough estimate of what passedover the Great North road, viz., 7,200,000 catties, would leave1, catties to be conveyed over the western route to 214. CHINESE TEA-COOLIK CA RKYING 370 rOlNDS OF TEA. The Traffic of the Great North Road. Litang and Batang and other local routes. This would allowfor about six times as much of the tea for Tibet to be carriedover the Great North road, and find its way to the heart ofthat great country. On a very fair basis, Sir Alexander Hosie has been ableto compute the quantity of tea passing through Tachienlu,
