The Battle of the Somme, July - November 1916 Battle of Albert. Mine explosion below Hawthorn Ridge, a quarter of a mile west of Beaumont Hamel, , 1st July 1916. This was the largest mine of the campaign; it made a crater in the German front line 150 yards long, 100 yards wide and 80 feet deep.
