Supermoon over lunar festival in Thailand. Loi Krathong is a colourful festival held every year on the full moon of the 12th month in the Thai lunar calendar. It is believed that launching one of these lanterns carries a person's bad luck and misfortune away into the air, especially if it disappears from view before the flame goes out. A supermoon occurs when a Full Moon coincides with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth during its orbit. This results in a large apparent size of the Moon's disk as seen from Earth.
