It is as Mr. Nordhoff has said, Though Californiahas been celebrated in books, newspapers, and maga-zines for more than twenty years (now forty) it is reallybut little known of to the tourist, Note.—The numbers in parenthesis ( ) are cross ref-erences, and refer to the page on which the place isdescribed: thus, (74) refers to page 74, whereon is described. The Time, Distance, Fares, etc., are all computedas from San Union Fkrry Depot—San Francisco. the third city in size (population, 1900, 66,960) in the State, on the east side of San Francisco Bay, is beautifully located on a tract of land stretching to the foot-hills of the Contra Costa range to the east. The business section is admirably situated on the levelland reaching to the water front, while the residencesection is on the foot-hill land, which alike is scenic andhealthful. The water-front property is rapidly increasingin importance with the deepening and improving of thechannel, the many factories situated in this localitybeing in evidence. The streets are broad, well paved, and well kept, andin the residence section lined with luxuriant shade is justly celebrated for its beautiful homes, therebeing a number of choice locations, such as near LakeMerritt, Verona Heights, East Oakland and PiedmontHeights.
