Timmelsjoch alpine pass near Obergurgl in Oetztal mountains of the Austrian Tyrol showing the border with Italy and the Sud Tyrol

The image is of border post markers, the old border crossing at Timmelsjoch separating the north from the south Tyrol. The Sud Tyrol being annexed to Italy after the First World War. Thereafter the Timmelsjoch became famous as a smugglers route. Both Italy and Austria maintained a garrison of troops on the border, this only ceased when Austria joined the European Union. Today the Timmelsjoch is a favourite for testing high speed sports cars, motor bike rallies and the Trans-Alp cycle race, who all enjoy testing their skills on the many hairpin bends.
