Bromine test for alkenes. Test tube containing an organic layer floating on top of an aqueous (water) layer containing bromine (orange). This is the set-up before the two layers are mixed during the test by shaking the tube. If the organic layer contains a reactive carbon double bond (an alkene), this will react with the bromine, decolourizing the water. If the organic layer does not contain a double bond (for example, if it is an alkane), then the decolourization of the water will not occur. This difference allows bromine water to be used to distinguish between alkenes and alkanes.
