Replica Iron Age (Pictish) figure-of-eight house at head of Bosta beach, Bernera, Isle of Lewis, Scotland, UK, looking NW to Old Hill island (Seana Chnoc). Built by Jim Crawford close to the site of 1990s excavations of a group of 3, C6th-8thAD structures. Photo taken June 2004 showing thatch roof which has since been replaced by turves. Netting, coir ropes & stones fasten down the oat straw. The projecting poles at the hipped ends are called raven-sticks. The one roof covers both circular partly subterranean rooms. The modern stone wall protects the house from grazing animals.
