Brazil, Rio . Statue of Zumbi, founder of colony of ex slaves


Zumbi was born free in Palmares in 1655, but was captured by the Portuguese and given to a missionary, Father Antonio Melo when he was approximately 6 years became the last leader of runaway slaves in the Quilombo dos Palmares. November 20th is celebrated as Zumbi Day, especially by Afro-Brazilians see him as a freedom fighter.
