Hydrogen-fuelled car. Man filling a car with liquid hydrogen fuel. The dish (at right) has collected the solar energy used to make the electricity needed to make the fuel. The fuel is made either by using electrolysis to split water into its constituent elements of hydrogen & oxygen or by the removal of hydrogen from heated biological material (biomass). Hydrogen is a non- polluting, non-toxic chemical which produces only water when burnt. Compared to an equivalent energy-value of petrol, liquid hydrogen occupies four times as much space but weighs only a third as much.
