He was asked, only a little while beforehis death, to suggest a toast for the approaching anniversary celebration. Iwill give you, said he, Independence for ever! Mr. Jefferson, it is wellknown, died on the same day ; and, just five years later, President Monroe alsosignalized by his death the anniversary of his countrys independence.
