Interior of the Chapel of Val de Grace
The view taken in 1828, shows the interior of the Chapel of Val de Grace which was the church of the royal abbey of Val de Grace. It was taken under the patronage of Anne of Austria queen of Louis XIII. Louis XIV founded the edifice to mark his mother’s wish. Jean Mansard made the original design which was only partially executed. He used it again in the Chateau de Fresnes. The sculptures are by Frances Angueir. The dome ranks beside those of the Pantheon and the Invalides in height and is decorated by Mignard. Moliere celebrated a poem in the chapel. The hearts of the royal family of France were deposited in the chapel. The image was drawn by T T Bury under the direction of A Pugin and engraved by B Winkles
