Tesla incandescent lamps and coil. Five incandescent lamps glowing by light induced by electric current in a Tesla Coil passing to the ground plate. The apparatus was designed by Serb-US physicist and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla (1856-1943), and constructed at his laboratory in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. Tesla operated this laboratory from 1899, when this photograph was taken. The coil named after him is a type of resonant transformer that is used to produce high-voltage, low-current, high-frequency alternating current electricity. Tesla's research led to key advances in areas such as alternating current power generation and transmission. The SI unit of magnetic flux density is named in his honour.
