Such shoesare of wrought iron supported by a wrought-ironyoke, contact being secured by spring pressure in addi-tion to gravity. The spring also acts as a shunt for con-ducting current from the shoe to the yoke. The principle troubles with this type of shoe consistof binding in the hangers, broken springs and burnedshoes. They should be lubricated on each inspectionby working a thin mixture of oil and grease on theinside of the hangers and then swinging the shoe backand forth to distribute the lubrication. Springs shouldbe inspected for slight cracks or fractures that are liableto cause breakage. The height of the shoes above therunning rail should be carefully gaged to prevent burn-ing. The shoes should also be gaged after every truck Electric Rij. Journal. Troubles with this type of shoeconsist of broken castings, excessively worn links andpins, broken or burned shunts and burned slipperscaused by jumping. On elevated lines the danger frombroken castings falling to the street is very great and overhauling, whenever wheels are changed and when-ever a beam is replaced or repaired. Shoes that are held in contact by spring pressurecommonly consist of a flat casting pivoted at the insideend and projecting out at right angles to the car. Trou-bles with this type consist principally of broken springsand castings and worn pins and bearings. On roads that operate their cars both b
