Transcription factor complexed with DNA. Computer model showing sterol regulatory element binding transcription factor 1 (SREBF1, horizontal) bound to a section of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, vertical). Transcription factors are proteins that bind to specific sequences of DNA and control the transcription (transfer) of genetic information from DNA to RNA (ribonucleic acid). SREBF1 is involved in the synthesis of sterols (such as cholesterol). It travels to the nucleus and activates transcription by binding to sterol regulatory element-1 (SRE1). The presence of sterols inhibits the formation of SREBF1 and the mature nuclear form is rapidly broken down, thereby reducing transcription.
