Geothermal limestone terrace. The white deposits are limestone, precipitated from hot water saturated with dissolved calcium carbonate. The water has been heated underground by geothermal activity. These are travertine deposits, a mixture of calcite and aragonite (both are forms of limestone). The columns are travertine deposits on the roots of plants previously growing in this location. Photographed at the hot springs in Pamukkale, Denizli Province, south-western Turkey.
