Blue sky profile silhouette horse statue General San Martin in front of Army of Andes Monument, Cerro Gloria, Mendoza, Argentina
The 3500-6000 men of Argentinian General San Martin's Army of the Andes assembled at Mendoza before a 25 day Andean crossing via the Uspallata Pass to free Chile, and ultimately Peru, from Spanish Colonial Rule in 1817. The Monument, celebrating the centenary in 1914, was designed by the Uruguayan sculptor, Juan Manuel Ferrari. The equestrian statue of General San Martin stands in front of a stone monolith topped by a huge bronze figure of Liberty, with broken chains on hands, advancing on a group of charging horse grenadiers. A condor in flight symbolizes the inspiration that carried the Army over the Andes.
