BIOTECHNOLOGY, GMO
Two scientists at French research institute INSERM have created genetically engineered tobacco plants containing the genes which control human hemoglobin production. This transgenic tobacco has a high concentration of hemoglobin, an essential element for the production of blood. Artificial blood produced in this way is expected to be marketed by 2010. Shown here, a symbolic illustration of the hemoglobin-producing tobacco.
