Emporia, Kansas, USA, 11th November, 2014 Cleat Buckbee (L) and Dennis Pearl both members of American Legion Post #5 in Emporia, Kansas enjoy the Ham and Bean luncheon held at the Legion Post after today's parade and memorial service. In 1953, Emporia was the site of the first Veterans Day observance in the United States. At the urging of local shoe cobbler Alvin J. King, Representative Edward Rees introduced legislation in The United States Congress to rename Armistice Day as Veterans Day. President Dwight D.
