Manual of mythology : Greek and Roman, Norse, and old German, Hindoo and Egyptian mythology . Zeus, or Jupiter. OR JUPITER. 35 like trees. The great centre of her worsliip was always atPessinus in Phrygia, under the shadow of Mount Dindymon,on which was a cave containing what was believed to be theoldest of her sanctuaries. Within this sanctuary was thetomb of Attis, and an ancient image of the goddess in theshape of a stone, which was said to have fallen from first temple at Pessinus had been erected, it was said, byKing Midas. Successive rulers of Phrygia maintained andendowed it so liberally that it continued to be a place of im-portance long after Phrygian civilization had sunk. Spread-ing from this centre, the worship of Kybele took hold first inthe neighbouring towns of Sardis, Magnesia, Smyrna, Ephe-sus, Lampsakos, and Kyzikos; thence to Athens, and in latertimes to the mountainous district of Arcadia, where it waslocally believed that Zeus had been born and that the creationof mankind had taken place. In Plate II. Rhea is represented as Mater turrita
