Village elders leading the ritual offerings of liquor at the tomb of Prabu Anom in Doko village
ndonesia is the world's most populous Islamic country where about 85 percent of the country's almost 200 million people are Muslim. Drinking alcohol is a sin under Islam and is forbidden. But in Doko Village, the community celebrates a pilgrimage ritual where their ancestors are honoured by the locals drinking liquor. The ritual is held once a year in the month of Suro in the Javanese calendar, at the tomb of Prabu Anom, an ancestor who is believed to be the founder of the village. The pilgrims drink a kind of brandy liqueur as their offering. The community also makes a traditional liquor of fermented rice called Badek. At the ceremony old, young, men, women and children are keen to drink the brandy and the Badek believing that by offering liquor to their ancestral spirits it will bring health, success and even youthfulness.
