Gate Number 2 of the Gdansk shipyard is the same gate from which Lech Walesa, the legendary leader of the Solidarity movement announced the termination of the strike and the signing of the August Agreements. However, former President Lech Walesa was not in attendance due to the political infighting and accusations that have been directed at him from the current governing party. The August agreements paved the way for the creation of the of the first independent trade union in the communist bloc known as NSZZ Solidarnosc. NSZZ Solidarnosc was abolished on December 13, 1981 when General Jaruzelski introduced martial law.
