Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia)


Wild native burrowing owl, this picture was taken on the eastern planes of Colorado. The burrowing owl uses abandoned prairie dog burrows. Unlike most owls the burrowing owl is active during the day, and usually hunts in the evening. The burrowing owl is an endangered species in Canada and is threatened or a species of concern in many other areas.
