The use of oxen would call for another modifi-cation in the form of the machine, for it now be-came necessary to direct it, as well as to keep itsteadily fixed in the soil; and for this purposethe handle was first furnished with a ring, butwas afterwards made double; by which lattercontrivance the husbandman was enabled to actupon the plough with both his hands, and thusnot only to force it more deeply into the soil, butalso to direct it in a straight course.
