We frequently attended churchat night; and through the influence and earnestworking of Miss Sallie Cain, afterwards Harper (an old school-rnate of mine) whowas teaching school there, Lieut. Blue, MartMiller and myself became seekers of religionand made a profession and joined the soon afterwards separated, never to see eachother again in this world. How Miller held outI never heard, but have heard that he died some-time after the THE STONEWALL BRIGADE. 211 As for myself, I have not lived up to the doc-trines of Christianity as I should. At times Ihave been wild and reckless, and continuing inthe army as I did amongst wild companions,naturally retrograded considerably; but I neverforgot the teachings of pious parents nor thegood offices of Miss Sallie, nor the pleasure Iexperienced in trying to be good. Lieut. Monroe Blue, as I afterwards learned,for I never saw him after parting with him inGen. Imbodens camp, was shortly afterward,captured by the enemy and taken to Johnson sIsland, an officers prison near Sandusky, they were removing him and some otherofficers to Ft. Delaware, he jumped from thetrain in the dead of night while it was runningat full speed, after having knocked down thesentinel who was guarding the door, and, bytraveling at night and hiding in the day-time,finally reached Virginia.
