White-faced and red-bodied Garuda

White-faced and red-bodied Garuda carries Vishnu and Laksmi on his shoulders. The divine couple sit on a throne surrounded by a gilded prabhavali (ornamental arch) from which emerge two umbrellas. Vishnu’s feet rest on the palms of Garuda. The god carries in his upper right hand the chakra (discus), in his upper left hand the shankha (conch), his lower right hand is in abhaya mudra and with his lower left he encircles Laksmi’s waist. The gold-complexioned goddess carries a lotus in her right hand. The throne is carried on Garuda’s brilliantly colored wings. An attendant sporting Vaishnava namams (emblems) on forehead, throat, chest and arms carries a fan on which a Tengalai namam is drawn. All the deities are richly clad and bejeweled and Garuda wears around his neck a snake instead of a floral garland.
