The father was a farmer and nurseryman, and brought hisfamily to Missouri and Linn county in 1866. Here he followed the samepursuits as in his native state, locating for the purpose on a farm one-half mile south of Bucklin. He lived on this farm four years, thenmoved north of Brookfield. He died in 1908. The mother is still livingin Brookfield. They became the parents of two children, their sonCharles and their daughter Alma, who is now the wife of W. A. Kaupof Brookfield. The grandfather, Jesse Green, was born and reared in Massachu-. C. W. GREEN HISTOEY OF LINxN^ COUNTY 483 setts, then moved to Lake county, Ohio, where he was a pioneer. Healso was a farmer and passed the remainder of his life in the county towhich he moved from his native state. He married Miss CynthiaLovett. Both died many years ago, but well advanced in years, havinglived long enough to see the wilderness in which they located in earlylife grow into great fruitfulness of production and become fragrantwith the odors of industry. Charles Willis Green was but six years old when his parentsbrought him to this county. He grew to manhood here, was educatedin the Brookfield public school, and at the age of fifteen began hiscraft and business career by becoming a printers devil in the office ofthe old Brookfield Chronicle. He finished learning his trade in theemploy of the Brookfield Gazette, and worked at it until 1883. Tn thatyear, although he was but twenty-three years old, he founded the
