John Smeaton (1759 - 1882) broke new ground when he designed this Eddystone Lighthouse. Built of both Cornish Granite outside and Portland stone inside. First lit in 1759 the 24 candle chandelier was replaced with oil lamps and reflectors. In 1845 a glass lens was installed. Replaced in 1882 most of the tower was re-built on Plymouth Hoe.
