Snail foot. Foot of a garden snail (Helix aspersa) crawling over glass, seen from below. Snails have a single foot. Movement is created by successive contractions of the muscles inside the foot. The surface underneath the foot is known as the sle. It glides over a thin film of mucous, which reduces friction. The mucous also improves suction and enables the snail to climb vertical surfaces. This snail is found throughout the world's temperate regions. It feeds on plant matter. It can withdraw into its shell to protect itself from predators. Photographed in the UK.
