September 1990: The Bonito lava flow erupted from the west base of Sunset Crater, the youngest cinder cone in northern Arizona's San Francisco volcanic field. The flow is about miles ( km) long and consists almost entirely of what is known as a'a lava. The eruption that formed Sunset Crater occurred about 1000 years ago. In the background at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument is O'Leary Peak, an older volcanic dome.
