Young Quay early evinced an ardent desirefor a thorough education, and, after passing throughthe various grades of the public schools, he took acourse at Jefterson College, from which institution hewas graduated at the age of seventeen. His familyhaving removed to Pittsburg, he began the studv oflaw in the office of Judge Sterrett, which, however,he intermitted by a visit to tl:e vSouthwest, where hespent a 3ear or two in teaching and lecturing. Re-turning home he resumed his law studies, and wasadmitted to the bar in 1854, at the age of 1S55 he was appointed to
